Maria has dedicated her leadership to recognizing her staff on a personal and individual level.
As the manager of multiple units, Maria has dedicated her leadership to recognizing her staff on a personal and individual level. Year after year, she has been recognized by her team on the employee engagement survey as a high performer. She supports a wall of recognition for the team in which all certified nurses are displayed for patients, families, and interprofessional colleagues to acknowledge their significant achievements. Diving deeper on a personal level she developed a birthday celebration program. This program showcases all team members from the pediatric intensive care unit both nursing and non-nursing.
Maria is committed to taking the time to sit with her patients and families to ensure that each interaction is meaningful. These efforts do not go unrecognized and for over two years, Press Ganey surveys have reflected her nurse manager rounding scores in the 99th percentile. And the PICU has been the recipient of the Northwell Ninety Award for 7 years straight making it the most in the health system.
With a high emotional intelligence and over 20 years of nursing leadership experience in the intensive care unit setting, she has built an environment that is conscious of the emotional, physical, and spiritual needs of her team. She has partnered with interprofessional partners such as chaplaincy, holistic care, and social work to ensure that her team is provided services that will support their well-being. As an emotionally intelligent leader, she supports her team in finding a harmonious balance between work and home.
With the national increase in gun violence, this unit has seen a significant increase in patients with gunshot wounds. With many of these cases meeting organ harvesting criteria the emotional impact was compounded. These sudden unexpected events add a level of magnification to the family and loved ones. To build the resiliency of the team to be able to support the needs of the family, this leader quickly activated resources to support the well-being of the team.
Thank you Maria for your leadership and commitment to our patients, families, and team members.
