Valerie worked the night shift and was always quick and efficient when checking my vitals so I could go back to sleep.
My stay was less than a week-long, about five days. Through this relatively short stay, I was fortunate to have one particularly extraordinary nurse. Her name is Valerie, a middle-aged woman with the coolest curly hair and most beautiful smile. Valerie made sure that I was always comfortable and made an effort to check in on me regularly and have actual conversations while coaxing me through taking my medications and caring for me.

I am fourteen years old, and I have an inflammatory bowel disease. I recently had a colonoscopy done, and it became apparent that I would need to go to the hospital to receive treatment. I was taking antibiotics to fight an infection I had also gotten and was receiving Remicade through an IV. This was particularly tough because allergic reactions have been known to occur when taking this medication, so my vitals were being taken very often. This also meant being woken in the night to have my blood pressure taken, and my temperature measured, and being bombarded with questions about how I was feeling when all I really wanted was to rest.

Valerie worked the night shift and was always quick and efficient when checking my vitals so I could go back to sleep. She ensured through the night that I was comfortable and felt at ease. Because of my bowel disease, I was also using the restroom very frequently, and I had directions to alert a nurse every time I used the restroom so they could assess the stool and take care of it. I want to personally thank Miss Valerie for literally putting up with my crap.

Without complaint, she would come to my room, examine the stool, measure my urine output, flush it all, and then clean the toilet seat to prevent the spread of my infection. Always rising to the task and exceeding expectations, Miss Valerie was there to ensure my well-being and return to good health. While a stay at the hospital is not something anyone wants, Valerie made sure that it was at least something I could tolerate. My five-day stay would’ve been completely different without her, and I want to say thank you for her support and willingness to work.
