The Veteran could not clean himself properly, so Tim cleaned him and helped him change from his soiled clothing to clean clothes.
A 57-year-old male veteran came into the Ortho/Neuro Specialty Clinic for his appointment. During the appointment, he was found to be homeless and incontinent of urine. The advanced provider came into the Ortho/Neuro nurse's office and reported that the Veteran had soiled his clothing with urine. She asked if there might be some donated clothing the Veteran could use. Without being asked to help this Veteran, Tim immediately stepped up.

Tim went to Voluntary services and got some clean clothing for the Veteran. He found briefs and wipes and took the Veteran to the bathroom. The Veteran could not clean himself properly, so Tim cleaned him and helped him change from his soiled clothing to clean clothes. After the Veteran was clean, Tim transported him to the lab, waited for his specimens to be drawn, and brought him back to the Ortho/Neuro clinic.

Tim transported the Veteran because it was taking transportation services a long time to be able to service this Veteran, and he did not want him to have to wait. When talking to the Veteran, Tim discovered that he was homeless and did not have any money for food to eat while at the VA. The Veteran explained that he had been staying in a homeless shelter, and his money and possessions had been stolen. Tim went to the Canteen and was able to get a sack lunch for the Veteran to eat. Tim connected the Veteran with a VA Social Worker who could assist him with trying to secure housing, and the Veteran received a bus ticket back to the shelter.

As he was leaving his appointment, the Veteran was smiling and kept thanking Tim, saying, "Thank you so much for all of your help! No one has cared enough to help me like you did!" Providing all of this care took Tim approximately 2 to 3 hours. He never complained and was eager to help a fellow Veteran in need. Tim has a generous heart and exemplifies what the "VA way" should be. He is always eager to help his fellow Nurses and Veterans and is an exceptional teacher. After reading what The DAISY Award stands for, I knew I had to nominate Tim for his outstanding care.
