My daughter, V, has stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. She has severe pain in her abdomen due to a liver tumor as well as bone pain. The severe pain causes vomiting, which is persistent until it is resolved. She also has brain mets that cause vomiting. There are more details that complicate her care as well. Nurse Melissa was able to understand V’s need for the right pain management. She had to do the work to find a doctor who could review her chart and prescribe the correct dose of pain medicine. Melissa delivered all her medications on time and early when necessary and allowed. Melissa showed V compassion and treated her with respect. Her care of V helped us to have time to relax when she was on duty. I had complete confidence in her care. She never needed a reminder to bring V her medication. I never heard her engage in any conversations that mocked or made fun of any other patients. She always made V feel respected. Thank you, Melissa, for advocating for V. Thank you for treating her like a person to be cared for, not like an annoying “call button pusher.” Thank you for tending to V’s medical issues, and thank you for your empathy, compassion, understanding, and wisdom.
