Skye cared for her patient, but she also cared for my family, checking on us as well as him, asking if we needed anything, and offering hugs and kind words to comfort us.
My brother was diagnosed 18 months ago with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. During that time he has been in and out of hospitals in the Nashville area several times and I had the opportunity to stay with him and assist with his care. Over recent weeks, his health declined substantially, and his care became more difficult. We were in and out of St. Thomas Midtown with stays on 5 Kidd. When he developed some heart complications, he was moved to the 4 Kidd cardiac wing, during which time I stayed with him again overnight. Until we moved to this floor, his nursing care was ordinary, just people doing their jobs. Skye was a blessing to us. She knew of his failing condition and was in and out of his room all night checking on us, bringing him pain meds as soon as it was available to him without us asking. She attended to him with care and compassion, which is rare in my experience, and I have stayed many times at the St. Thomas hospitals with my parents as well. Skye cared for her patient, but she also cared for my family, checking on us as well as him, asking if we needed anything, and offering hugs and kind words to comfort us. We lost him two days after he left the hospital, but I know that he got the kind and compassionate care that he deserved while she was his nurse. I am forever grateful for that.
