This nurse went for a walk outside during her lunch and saw a woman who looked lost. She approached her and offered help. The woman was Spanish-speaking with little English, and Sara speaks English with little Spanish. With a mixture of languages, she soon learned that the woman had recently lost vision in one of her eyes and was afraid of going blind. Sara began to assess if she was having any stroke symptoms while encouraging her to come to the ER at SLMC. The patient was afraid to go, indicating she did not have insurance. She assured her that she could seek emergency care and explained about the financial programs available. She walked the patient to the check-in desk in the ER, making sure that the patient was taken care of and that someone would meet with the patient to discuss Helping Hands. The patient was so grateful for her help, telling her, "You are an angel from heaven; I knew it as soon as I saw you." Thank you for sharing your compassionate care!
