My 89-year-old grandmother sat in the Drew Memorial ER needing an ICU bed. No beds were open at larger hospitals and Drew Memorial didn't have enough RNs working at the time to admit her. Her condition was critical and we (the family) were afraid we might lose her.

We found out later that Heather gave up her off day to come in and help staff the ICU at Drew Memorial. Because of her unselfishness, my grandmother was able to be admitted to ICU and moved out of the ER. Heather continued to be my grandmother's night shift nurse over the next three days in the ICU. She kept me updated during the night when I would check on my grandmother and never made me feel like I was bothering her. Heather would wait for me to arrive each morning to give me an update. She encouraged my grandmother to fight to get better. She encouraged me that my grandmother was taken care of. She showed such a servant's heart and I never worried about my grandmother while in the ICU. All the ICU nurses were amazing, but Heather stood out. She poured her whole heart into delivering nursing care.
