Ms. Brody is an advocate for the Veteran and a Model for what a Nurse Leader should look like.
I do not have a “Specific Situation” however, I would like to nominate Marie who has demonstrated going above and beyond in everything she does. It’s not a “situation”, it’s her “character”. This is much more commendable needing recognition because her actions as a Nurse Leader demonstrate the epitome of what a professional and caring Nurse Leader should be.
Not only does she provide guidance and drive the quality of care for the Veterans in all the work she has done at VAPIHCS, but she is also a perfect example of what a DAISY Nurse Leader should be like. Ms. Brody has turned the CLC around. Granted, she has not done this all on her own. She has done this with her Leadership qualities. A Nurse Leader can motivate, inspire, empower, and build up other nurses. As a Nurse Leader, she has been able to build a coalition of nurses working toward safe quality care. She has developed a unique trusting relationship with the ACN Nurse, nurse managers, and staff nurses at the CLC to create a team of caring nurses.
By her inviting, encouraging, and non-threatening spirit, she has gotten nurses involved in the improvement efforts at the CLC. Not only has this improved the safe quality of care at the CLC for the Veterans, but it has also improved the nursing processes and built up the expertise of the nursing staff as a team and individuals. The development of the nurses has created a momentum of nurses striving for excellence. From what I have observed (and there must be more that has gone unseen by me), these are a few examples of the actions of Ms. Brody:
1) Assisted the Associate Chief Nurse (ACN) and Nurse Managers with the improvement of communication among the staff through Concert Huddles.
2) Helped a staff nurse work toward her promotion by guiding her with creating trainings and competencies for nurses on G-Tube assessment, monitoring, and care; and updating the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) which required editing to incorporate improvement from the vulnerabilities found during RCA (Root Cause Analysis).
3) Independently took the initiative to motivate a team of nurses to put together a Safety Board for the Residents in the CLC during Patient Safety Week. This innovative idea was never done before.
4) Observes the nursing process, reviews documentation, and research best practices to present to the nurses for acceptance of improvement changes and assist them with implementing them into the “environment and culture” of the CLC.
5) Knows each Veteran Resident in the CLC and their individual needs and desires. She constantly reminds the team during RCAs and Committee meetings that the CLC are these Veteran’s homes.
6) Helps to find a way to provide CLC Residents with the dignity, freedom, and comfort of a family atmosphere that promotes their quality of life in the CLC, while continuing to keep them safe.
7) Reviews the Laboratory and Radiology Reports monthly for fallouts and non-compliance with VAPIHCS Policies and VHA Directives. Besides identifying these fallouts, she will notify the Providers to ensure that the Veteran gets the follow-up they need in a timely manner.
Ms. Brody is an advocate for the Veteran and a Model for what a Nurse Leader should look like. She is always willing to assist and develop other nurses. I would want her as my nurse, and I hope that this awards review board sees the Nurse Leader attributes in Ms. Brody as she continues to promote safe quality care for the Veterans while inspiring other nurses to do the same.
