Katherine quickly walked over to the patient, rubbed her shoulders, and asked her why she was crying. The patient replied, "I always cry when people are extra nice to me."
Katherine always goes above and beyond for her patients, their families, and her teammates. She never complains and ALWAYS has a smile on her face.
Recently, I was assisting a patient who wanted to go on a walk. The unit was short-staffed and had no RN or ACT available at that moment to help her go on a walk. The patient stated that the doctors were just in the room and expressed to the patient the importance of her walking as much as possible to help clear her bowel obstruction to get her gut working again and work towards discharge. Sensing the urgency in the physician's request to walk more, the patient was anxious, tearful, and concerned that we would not be able to help her walk as much as she needed. As I was getting the patient out of the chair to go on her walk, Katherine walked in and told the patient that if she "wants to go for a walk later and no one else is available, tell them to call Katherine, and I'll come to walk with you." The patient immediately started crying. Katherine quickly walked over to the patient, rubbed her shoulders, and asked her why she was crying. The patient replied, "I always cry when people are extra nice to me."
The patient was so touched that Katherine remembered her from a previous hospitalization, and the patient remembered the excellent care she provided as well as her incredible bedside manner from that stay, helping the patient to feel well cared for and safe.
It is also worth noting that during the interaction detailed above, Katherine had her own full patient assignment (5 patients) on the total opposite side of the unit from this patient's room, with minimal ACT support. This particular shift, we only had one ACT for the entire unit, leaving only 12 of 25 patients on the unit with an aide for the shift (the other 13 rooms did not have an ACT, and the RNs were responsible for 100% of their patient's care and needs).
Given these circumstances, I think this interaction was an exceptional demonstration of Katherine's attitude and the super-human work she does every day. Katherine is a true shining star, and I hope that she continues to want to renew her FlexRN contract on 8AB. I've worked with Katherine as one of her unit leaders for several months while she was an agency RN and now again after taking a full-time FlexRN job within TriHealth. I am so happy that Katherine decided to come onboard to TriHealth, as she exemplifies the TriHealth way and the attitude that is expected of team members who are working at TriHealth.
