Nobody is more passionate about creating a meaningful vision and sustaining positive outcomes for Street 1 than Shelby Smith. Shelby arrived at Winter Haven during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. She stepped up as a leader on Street 1, first volunteering to be the unit's safety coach and later becoming their COPD Navigator. When the opportunity arose, she transitioned smoothly into the Nurse Manager role.

Shelby works tirelessly to empower her nurses to provide high-quality, patient-centered care to all patients on her unit. Daily, Shelby is actively involved in patient care on Street 1. She can be seen on the unit, monitoring nursing practice and offering help, answering call lights, and addressing patients' needs in real-time. She is an advocate for our patients and our staff.

Shelby is always open to speaking up if she sees a situation where a team member or patient needs assistance. She is a genuine role model for exemplary practice and supports Street 1 in consistently maintaining an environment of quality care for our patients. Shelby's passion for creating a safe and meaningful work environment is infectious. She always seeks opportunities to mentor her team and serve as a listening ear to her fellow team members, thus earning her the nickname "Yoda." She sees every member of the unit as valuable and is always encouraging staff to discuss ways in which we can improve.

One of her greatest leadership attributes is encouraging and empowering her team to take on leadership roles on the unit and throughout the BayCare Health System. One example comes to mind: Shelby ordered an engraved award for Street 1's 2023 Nurse of the Year. However, she discovered she had mistakenly been sent the incorrect one when it arrived. Rather than waste an opportunity, Shelby decided to use the faulty award as a fun way to encourage her fellow teammates by awarding the "Marleen Brad" award and a smile to go with it.

No matter the circumstance, Shelby goes above and beyond in all she does for her team. Fearless in her dedication to patient and team, Shelby dives headfirst into any challenge. With compassion and grace, she selflessly seeks to elevate all those she encounters each day. She is the definition of a DAISY Nurse Leader and a testament to BayCare Values!
