Following her visit, Fred took his lunch to take this lady home as she was going to wait in the lobby until her family was available.
Some of the great examples of Fred living out our mission of SSM and exemplifying what it means to be an SSM Health Nurse:
1. There was a sweet lady who was seen in the cancer center, she was feeling ill still so she was seen in the emergency department as well. Following her visit, Fred took his lunch to take this lady home as she was going to wait in the lobby until her family was available.
2. One hot summer day a sweet dog walked into the ER, although we are a people ER, this sweet dog obviously needed help. Fred took his lunch yet again and took this dog to his home, where they have adopted this dog and he lives his best life with Fred and his family.
3. We had a patient recently in the ER who had undiagnosed Dementia; he had spent days in the ER awaiting placement at a facility. This gentleman was very agitated to the point of showing verbal and physical aggression. Fred took the time to go in and talk to him, reorient him, and bathe him all day long to keep him from feeling that anxiety not knowing what was going on. By the time this patient left, Fred and him were “old friends.”
4. Fred spent his day off talking with Will Rogers Elementary students in the morning to allow the kids to ask questions about what it's like to be a real ER Nurse.
5. Fred took another day to go with us to tour Red Rock and speak with their administration about the services offered.
6. Fred assisted with the clothing drive the ER did for Red Rock Behavioral Health by driving the items to the facility and delivering them inside.
7. He has requested to help precept our new hires to help them acclimate to our culture here in the ER and to make sure that everyone receives a warm welcome to our Team.
8. As a team lead in the department, Fred is very flexible. He does whatever needs to be done. Sees a need, fills a need. Fred guides the team with a level of calmness that keeps the team focused on the task at hand, caring for our patients.
Not only does Fred demonstrate the SSM “I am” statements of I am a professional, I am an advocate, I am a partner, I am accountable, and I am a leader here at work, he extends it into the community showing he truly follows our mission “through our exceptional health care services, we reveal the healing presence of God”.
