Corey has been on our unit for two years. As a new grad and rookie, Corey is the most patient and kindhearted nurse I have met in my 18 years. He is constantly rounding on his patients and his teammates. Whenever help is needed, Corey is there in a moment’s notice. No job is too big, too small, or too taxing. I have never heard a negative word out of his mouth, and he is always positive.

On our unit, we have a patient who has been there since her liver transplant in October. She suffered intracranial hemorrhage after transplant, requiring a craniotomy and resulting in aphasia. At times, she simply moans and moans, needs help to eat, and is incontinent. The placement options are minimal, and many nurses tire from caring for her as it is emotionally taxing. Corey is patient with her and so sweet when she cannot get her words out – she calls him “baby.” She lights up when she sees him, and he always visits her when he is not assigned to her.

One day, she was so agitated and pulling at her peg tube and IV lines and we had to put her in restraints for a short time for her safety. Corey was visibly upset over this and sat outside her room/stayed with her the entire time until we could calm her. As soon as it was safe, he removed her restraints, stroked her head, and held her hands as she told him, “I am sorry.” Corey is absolutely one of the kindest, sweetest, and compassionate young men I have ever met, and it is an honor to work with him. He is a truly empathetic nurse, and I would love to recognize him! Thank you!
