I was on the phone with a patient who had questions about sexual assault treatment. They were embarrassed and scared and didn't want to come be seen at the hospital. They had asked specific questions about medicine to prevent disease and I didn’t have the answers. I was pleading with the patient to come in and be seen when Kurt walked by. I knew Kurt was a SANE nurse so I asked him to speak with the patient. He dropped everything he was doing, spoke with this person, and convinced them to come be seen.

The patient didn’t want to report and didn’t want a kit collected but they did come in. This person came in and got the medicine to prevent HIV, hepatitis, and other STDs because Kurt took the time to answer their questions. Once the patient arrived, Kurt took the patient (above and beyond his own 4 patients) and cared for them through discharge. Kurt is exceptional. He’s an amazing, compassionate person and nurse. He genuinely cares about our patients. He is an excellent resource for SANE cases and he may have saved that patient's life that night.
