My 89 year old mother had surgery and was brought to the 3rd floor and the Kaiser staff was just phenomenal. All of the PCTs and Nurses took wonderful care of her but Laverne took a special interest in her and stopped by regularly to check on her. Laverne was the first nurse to notice me (her daughter) and to ask how we were doing. She talked about how exhausting it can be to care for your parents (my father has Parkinson's) and told me she would personally make sure my mom was well looked after and to go home and get some rest. It was such a blessing to be able to go home and relax that night with the feeling that all was well at the hospital. The next day, Laverne and the nurses helped mom get out of bed and sit up, which got my mom to begin her recovery. They helped her in and out of the restroom, encouraged her to try to eat, and when she just couldn't, they put her back on an IV drip to keep her nourished and hydrated. Although these are all normal things nurses do all day, every day, it was the caring and gentleness they demonstrated that made all the difference for my mom.
