While holding the C-spine and applying pressure to a bleeding head wound, Jean spoke exclusively to the patient in Spanish with reassurance.
While we know that our ED teams are trained to handle emergencies, there's more to patient care than just completing tasks. This night, the ED team handled a double trauma event involving siblings with not only excellent care but also compassion and kindness. The family was bilingual, though Spanish was a preference, and Jean really stepped in (literally) to be the calm, reassuring voice for one of the patients and guardian. While holding the C-spine and applying pressure to a bleeding head wound, Jean spoke exclusively to the patient in Spanish with reassurance. She stayed with the patient the entire time, moving with them from the trauma bay to imaging and back! Her focus on the patient and family members is completely within her character.
Additionally, her years of experience are valuable to providing care during an emergent situation like this one. Jean was such a blessing to this patient and guardian with her reassurance and explanations in their native language and calm, confident demeanor. The entire team, but especially Jean, went above and beyond this night to make sure the patient was cared for! This was an amazing practice of an experienced nurse providing family-centered care with compassion and efficiency.
