One day on Swann 7 a patient who had been on our floor for months had a rapid response. I would like to share some events that truly shine a light on Priscilla's knowledge, skill set, and heart. Priscilla’s day started normal. She arrived and took reports on her patients, passed her meds, and sat down to begin charting her assessments. A family member, who was not her patient, purposely set out to find her to report that he felt something was wrong. Priscilla immediately jumped into action. She found the nurse, informed her, and went to the room to see the patient herself. The doctor was paged. Priscilla went into the room with the bedside nurse and they agreed to call a rapid response. If I could include a picture of the scene I found when the rapid response team arrived and the patient's family was asked to step out no
one would doubt that she is a DAISY nurse. With my lack of eloquence, I’ll attempt to paint the picture. The patient's mother was sitting on the floor at the end of the hallway in obvious distress. Priscilla sat down directly in front of her, knees almost touching. Although I was not close enough to hear it and they were speaking Spanish it was obvious the family member got immediate relief. From what I know about Priscilla, I believe she was discussing what was happening, and what the next steps would be, informing her that she is here for them. Giving comfort at such an emotional time is a feat for any nurse. This patient was intubated and brought to the ICU. To conclude, a patient that was not even her own.
Due to the patient and his family being there so long and building a relationship with Priscilla, they knew she could be counted on. In their search for her, the brother bypassed multiple RNs, charge nurses, and techs, to specifically find Priscilla. This speaks volumes. Priscilla's light shines bright and should be recognized.
