She created a picture book of step-by-step instructions for the caregiver. This book was over 20 pages long and included photos of the pump along with written directions on how to program the pump.
She showed exceptional care and patience with a patient and family. This patient was being discharged home with a new feeding tube process using a pump. The patient’s sister is the caregiver and felt overwhelmed with learning how to use the new feeding pump. She created a picture book of step-by-step instructions for the caregiver. This book was over 20 pages long and included photos of the pump along with written directions on how to program the pump. She then spent 3 hours with the caregiver, providing discharge education on medications and allowing the caregiver to practice programming the pump multiple times. She took time to write the indication for each medication on the AVS so the caregiver would have that information as well. This was a unique situation, and she handled it with grace and ultimate professionalism. She did not want to accept praise from her co-workers, stating she felt it was just part of her job. She went above and beyond to ensure this patient’s safety at home and that the caregiver felt comfortable with setting up the pump before discharge. She is an excellent example of professional nursing.
