Billy distracted me and showed me with his machine how he was going to find the right vein. I didn’t even feel it when he stuck me. He was so gentle.
Billy joined the Vascular Access Specialist Team (IV Team) in 2021 and he has been a joy to work with since day 1. Being the only IV team nurse on nights on the Abbott Campus is not an easy task. Billy quickly became proficient in using the ultrasound. With his ultrasound skills and his gentle demeanor, Billy makes an enormous difference for our patients in the hospital. Recently, during patient rounding, one of Billy’s patients recognized him as a kind, compassionate, and intelligent nurse. I was so proud when the patient stated, “Billy distracted me and showed me with his machine how he was going to find the right vein. I didn’t even feel it when he stuck me. He was so gentle. And I know all about IVs because I have been stuck so many times”. My heart swelled hearing this. I have heard similar comments from other patients and staff, so I was not surprised.

A nurse at Mother Baby Center sent this note to me and Billy “Thank you for your patience and teamwork over at Mother Baby tonight. We had a patient with a history of complex trauma in the midst of delivering a baby, and you were so gracious about working around her contractions to keep her physically and emotionally safe. We so appreciate you”. As you can see from such comments, Billy is special. He loves learning and teaching. He is precepting critical care nurses and medical-surgical float pool nurses to use the ultrasound. He is teaching inpatient nurses about vascular access, maintenance, and care.

A new nurse sent this comment: “Thank you Billy for being my preceptor; for giving me constructive feedback, for giving me encouragement, support, and praise! You are a delight to work with, and Allina is blessed to have you”.

Another staff member wrote after getting lessons on a new technology: “You are a ROVER magician!! Thank you for all of your patience with teaching this old dog a new trick! You are an excellent teacher!"

As a manager, I am thankful to have Billy on my team. He is my eyes and ears when I am not at the hospital. He orders supplies, is on top of staffing issues, and reports any safety concerns right away so I can follow up on them in a timely fashion. He picks up when we are short-staffed so our patients can get timely care and his coworkers are supported. He is a silent leader on our team. I am excited that he is studying hard for the vascular access certification exam, so he continues to learn and excel in the specialty. Billy is a gem. I hope he never leaves my team.
