During end-of-life care for one of our patients, Chalyn had a 50-year-old cancer patient who was beginning the dying process, and the family was not yet ready to accept this. Chalyn called a code rapid, and the patient was transferred to the ICU. During this time, Chalyn comforted the patient’s teenage daughter and bonded with her. After the patient was settled, Chalyn took the daughter to see her in the ICU, and they prayed together. Chalyn also purchased a pair of pink crocs just like hers because the patient’s daughter liked them so much. Soon after that, the patient was downgraded and returned to the 8th floor, where another code rapid was called, and the patient was sent back to the 7th floor where the family was able to make the decision to make the patient comfortable and send her back to the 8th floor. The family requested Chalyn to be her nurse. Chalyn has gone above and beyond to care for this patient and her terrified teenage daughter. Chalyn worked with the Child Life Specialist to help the sweet girl grieve the loss of her mother.

Chalyn demonstrated exceptional, compassionate care. She took time for the family and even stayed after work to sit and comfort the family. She made fingerprint hearts for the patient’s family to have a keepsake in her final days.
