Mikel also coordinated with the spouse, Transport, Social Work, and EMSA to arrange pick up of the veteran and return him to his house.
We had a urology clinic veteran show up via EMSA transport. The veteran was moved from the EMSA stretcher to a urology clinic hospital gurney, and EMSA left. The veteran's spouse and caregiver stated that the veteran needed his trach suctioned while here, and the wife did not bring his portable suction or Trach supplies. The Urology Clinic staff explained that we did not have wall suction or trach supplies in the urology clinic and offered to take him to the ER. The spouse and veteran did not want to go to the ER and became upset and asked for a manager. Mikel Drake was called and went to speak to them. Mikel explained the limitations of the clinic and assessed the veteran. After speaking to the veteran and caregiver, it was determined he was stable enough to complete his urology clinic appointment and catheter change out before suctioning. Mikel Coordinated with ENT Clinic staff for an exam room with wall suction and trach suctioning supplies. Once the Urology clinic appointment was complete, Mikel transported the veteran to the ENT Clinic, where his spouse suctioned him. While transporting the veteran to the ENT clinic, the spouse informed Mikel that the veteran also needed labs drawn while here. Knowing this would be another transport to a crowded waiting room via the hospital gurney, Mikel coordinated with her manager to contact the lab and ask if they could come to the veteran in ENT. The lab knew the veteran by name as he was a very difficult stick while in-patient status. Lab gathered everything needed and completed his lab draws in the ENT Clinic, saving transporting the veteran away from the ability to suction him. Mikel also coordinated with the spouse, Transport, Social Work, and EMSA to arrange pick up of the veteran and return him to his house. Mikel stayed with the veteran while another staff member escorted the spouse to Prosthetics to obtain a portable suction unit. These events transpired from 12:30 PM to 4:00 PM before EMSA picked up this veteran. Mikel's experience and knowledge ensured the veteran received the care he needed with minimal impact on the veteran, spouse, and other clinical areas.
