My son had surgery at West Kendall Baptist Hospital. His pre-op nurse was Mediah Collins Smith. Mediah was an absolute gem to us from the moment she met us in the waiting area to the time my son was taken to the OR. Mediah took her time explaining every single step to us, including letting us know when the Anesthesiologist and Surgeon would come in to speak with us. Mediah noticed my son’s hands were shaking (he was very nervous), she spoke to him in a very kind and gentle tone, assuring him that they would do their best to take care of him. She explained each consent prior to him signing and assisted him in completing his advance directive. Although my son is 21, Mediah included me in the conversations to make sure I was also aware of the process. She not only took care of him, but she also made sure I was comfortable and all of my questions were answered.

One thing that stood out for me is her consistency in hand hygiene, I noticed she used the gel sanitizer every time she went in and out of the room. The entire time we were in pre-op, Mediah kept us updated on as far as the schedule and next steps. Mediah had my son prepared and ready for surgery quickly and efficiently, his IV was in with fluids running, and he was comfortably tucked in on his stretcher. Most importantly, my son was less nervous because of Mediah.

I believe Mediah is a DAISY Nurse. She is kind, compassionate, and a true nurse professional. WKBH’s surgical department is very lucky to have her on their team!
