Kane cared deeply for his patients. He made my mom feel comfortable in a terrible situation and sought out complementary therapies to help aid in reducing my mom's pain when she wasn't due for any medications. My mom felt relief knowing Kane was her nurse.
My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013 and four years later, she was diagnosed with bone metastasis. More recently, the cancer had spread to lymph nodes and soft tissues in her shoulder blade causing increased pain and lymphedema in her left arm.
Throughout my mom’s treatments, she was never hospitalized until May 2023. She was discharged and then readmitted to York Hospital with severe shortness of breath. Over the next week, we received devastating news that her cancer had spread further and was causing her lungs to fill with malignant fluid. During that time, Kane took care of my mom for several shifts. Before we knew what the cause of the pneumonia and pleural effusion was, my mom was scared, incredibly short of breath, and in pain. Kane was knowledgeable and provided excellent medical care to my mom. However, there was more that set him apart in my mom's esteem. Kane cared deeply for his patients. My mom's appetite was nonexistent during this time. However, one morning at 2 a.m., she decided she was hungry. One of her favorite snacks was peanut butter toast and tea. My dad asked Kane if he could find this type of snack at the hospital’s cafeteria. Instead of sending my dad to the cafeteria, Kane made my mom peanut butter toast and brought her a variety of teas, teas that I know WellSpan doesn't normally stock.
Soon after, my mom came home and received hospice care. While she was hospitalized or shortly after she was home, she asked me to nominate Kane for a DAISY Award. She knew how wonderfully he cared for her. My mom passed away at the age of 62 years old.
Until today, I haven't been able to write this nomination. It is still incredibly painful, but my whole family, especially my dad, wants Kane to know he made a lasting and powerful impact on our entire family. We want Kane to know what a difference his care made in our lives and in the last few precious weeks we had with our mom.
One time, I read how small actions taken by people can have a ripple effect and an impact. Kane created a ripple effect in my family and friends. Kane is more than just a competent nurse; he is truly a compassionate person.
