The next day when the patient was ready for discharge, Jakob willingly came back and stayed with the nursing staff for over 3 hours that day.
Respect: We respect life at all stages and promote the dignity and well-being of every person. Jakob was very respectful, kind, and patient for a patient who struggled with being hospitalized. He was able to provide the patient and her newborn with the necessary information to care for herself and the newborn after discharge.
Community: We cultivate relationships that inspire service and promote justice in our organization and throughout our communities, with special concern for the poor and marginalized. FCS had a patient who would not communicate with our female healthcare team. FCS being all female caregivers this proved to be difficult for us to care for her and her newborn. When the FCS charge nurse notified the Supervisor of the challenging situation, she assisted with locating a male nurse from the Resource Pool (Jakob) to assist on the first post-op day. The next day when the patient was ready for discharge, Jakob willingly came back and stayed with the nursing staff for over 3 hours that day. He had a full assignment on another unit and came without complaint. The patient was dealing with a lot of anxiety and mental health issues, Jakob was able to calm her and re-direct her to get the tasks done to discharge this patient.
He came to a unit that was unfamiliar to him and did assessments and discharge teaching to ensure the patient was ready for discharge with her newborn baby. He went way above his duties that day in helping us with a very difficult situation. All with a smile on his face. This is an example of the community that St. Mary’s-Madison has within the building. Not only did he take care of his working community, but he also took care of the larger Madison community by assisting this patient and her needs.
