Alysia soothed her fears by taking the time to talk to her calmly and explain things to her in simple, easy-to-understand language.
In reading the description of the DAISY Award, I cannot think of anyone more deserving. I would like to relate my personal experience when she helped care for my mom, but I am sure she provides the same excellent level of care and compassion to all of her patients.
When my elderly mother was in the hospital for an operation last month, we were fortunate to have Alysia as her nurse. Alysia soothed her fears by taking the time to talk to her calmly and explain things to her in simple, easy-to-understand language. She had an extraordinary amount of patience and understanding, repeating instructions as well as making sure my mother understood each step in the process, both before and after surgery and ultimately when she was being discharged. Although she had several patients to assist, she never made us feel rushed or not heard. That shows an extreme amount of skill and experience that we are very grateful for.
Post-operation, my mother was scared about being alone. Alysia once again took the time to show compassion by talking to her and did not leave until my mom knew everything was okay. That was at the end of her 12-hour shift when she must have been very tired and ready to go home. Aside from the compassion she showed, Alysia also provided excellent medical care. The doctors came in to perform the operation and the follow-up, but Alysia was the one who did the heavy lifting to make sure my mother was recuperating properly. She also provided advice on how she could heal quicker, an important consideration given my mom is 77 years old.
While I have run across many fine nurses, Alysia Eschner stands head and shoulders above the others. Her caring and compassionate care for my mom should serve as an inspiration for all nurses.
