A dear friend of mine is 90 years old and has had a very difficult year. She has been in and out of Avera Sacred Heart Hospital four times in the past five months. Last week, my friend took a fall and broke her femur. She underwent surgery. That evening, Cortney was on duty. What a blessing to have such a caring nurse during such a difficult time. While I was there visiting, Cortney came to check on my friend. She came in and out several times to care for her during the time I was visiting. Cortney never acted rushed, even though she was busy.

When giving meds, she took time to carefully give them one at a time with applesauce and gave drinks between each pill; carefully making sure she didn't choke. That might not seem special, but the way she treated my friend meant the world to me. Cortney took time to make sure my friend was comfortable. She spoke with a calm and kind voice. I was able to go home that evening with such peace in my heart, knowing that my friend was in excellent hands.

Our 94-year-old mother was admitted to the hospital with a bowel obstruction. She had been living independently in her own home and had been fairly healthy. One weekend she came down with severe abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting and was taken to the hospital. After a week, the bowel was not resolving itself and it was decided Mom would go into hospice. She had her ups and downs during this four-and-a-half-week period.

Cortney was her nurse several times. While everyone was so good and caring, Cortney was always there trying to keep her as comfortable as possible and always asking us if there was anything she could do for us. She sensed so well that this strong Mother was very important to us. Even though we were so grateful for her good, long life, we were all so sad to lose her.

Our goal was to keep her as comfortable as possible. Cortney was on top of keeping her free from pain and nausea, always informing us what she was giving her and what else she could do for her. All we had to do was ask. The night she expired, Cortney was working and called me about the change in her breathing. When I arrived, she was almost constantly in the room doing whatever she could do for her in her last hours. It was so comforting to me when I heard Cortney's voice that night she called and my whole family was so comforted to know she was with Mom in her final hours. We all felt she was simply exceptional!
