Mary was kind, compassionate, and empathetic with the patient. She allowed the patient to voice her concerns, reoriented her, and reassured her she was safe.
While on clinical rotation on T12, a confused patient started to become distraught and irritated that they were in the hospital. This patient felt as if they were being held hostage and against their will. Mary, walked into the room to help provide assistance when a bed alarm went off. Mary was kind, compassionate, and empathetic with the patient. She allowed the patient to voice her concerns, reoriented her, and reassured her she was safe. The patient went from being upset and jumping out of bed multiple times to agreeing to sit in the chair (with a chair alarm) and enjoy her dinner. I cannot attest to whether the patient remained calm moving forward but for the thirty minutes after that we were on the unit, they did. Oftentimes, patients get confused when in the hospital regardless of their baseline mentation, and sometimes all they are searching for is someone to reassure them that they are safe, and that is exactly what Mary did.
