The way I dealt with everything was depression, but every time I had Rui, I could always say she genuinely made me want to feel better.
I was born with multiple GI issues. I have a pseudo-obstruction disorder and other issues that cause me to be in pain. Since 2023, I have been, and as of writing this, I am still in the hospital. If you’re wondering why I’m informing you of this, it is because I have been around the block and dealt with stuff that no child should go through, but I can’t do much about it. So as I sit here dealing with my issues, I have met and gotten to know a nurse named Rui.
The way I dealt with everything was depression, but every time I had Rui, I could always say she genuinely made me want to feel better. I felt like I could connect with her on a genuine level rather than anything else because she was so friendly and really put effort into making me feel at home. I know a lot of nurses on floor 20 due to my prolonged visits to hospitals, and I can genuinely agree that Rui embodies what this hospital stands for, which is getting better. Not only has she done a tremendous amount of work towards my care, but she also took the genuine time to relate to me one-on-one and show me she really does care.
One night I was in a lot of pain and just really sick of it, and rather than her being neglectful or not caring, which she could have been, she took the time to play a game with me on the Wii, and it genuinely was a lot of fun. Rui is the embodiment of what this award is for; she truly is a one-of-a-million type of nurse and has been sensational in making me happy and just helping with my care overall. After that night, Rui has become such a bright spot in my night, benefiting me in any way she could. I genuinely believe that Rui is a sensational person.
Every night she jokes and has a great time with me, which really proves how well she has been trained. She treats me so well, and I am forever grateful for her. Since Day 1 of meeting her, she has proven to be one of my most favorite nurses due to all the benefits she has given me in the times I needed them the most. There have been days when I was extremely depressed, and she came through for me, just being a human. She talks about shows with me and just treats me like a friend and like a human, not a patient or a case number.
I used to have a friend similar to Rui when I was in elementary school. I wish I was still with that friend, but I moved, got sicker, and had less socialization due to multiple hospital visits. So having someone in my corner who has done that much really does prove she is not just a story but a statement that anyone who comes into contact with her will be treated as a human, not someone who’s just a patient but a friend, and that is why I personally nominate her for the DAISY Award. Rui is an amazing nurse. She brings a smile to everyone’s face and has such an energetic, enthusiastic, and passionate spirit. She makes difficult situations less stressful and provides a comforting ear to listen. She is full of life and brightens up the very darkness of days. She is an amazing nurse and an even better person.
