Her manner and approach are one of extreme calm, compassion, and empathy, putting all those in her care at ease.
I would like to nominate Kathryn (better known as Kathy) for the DAISY award. This is so deserved as she has met the criteria necessary on countless occasions. Throughout her many years working for the trust, in Paediatric ED, Children’s ward, and most recently as a sister based in Children’s Day services, where she has worked tirelessly as a plastics specialist nurse.

As mentioned, there have been many occasions where Kathy has delivered compassionate patient and family-centered care, she has always prioritised the patient and family’s needs and ensured that she acts as an advocate when necessary. For example, she will liaise with both the plastics team and the Children’s Safeguarding team when needed. She always ensures that the patient is comfortable and fully aware of any procedures and/or dressing changes. Kathy is especially efficient at including the Play specialist team when required, which improves the patient experience. Her manner and approach are one of extreme calm, compassion, and empathy, putting all those in her care at ease.

She has always been so approachable and has time to help all her colleagues within the Day unit, always ensuring that, as a senior staff member, everyone’s voice is heard regardless of banding or job role. This is from both professional and wellbeing point of view.   The care given by Kathy has been exemplary; she ensures that, above all else, patient care is of the utmost standard, staying hours beyond the finish of her shift on a regular basis, as the current workload of paediatric patients requiring plastic input is very high.  She does this without prompting, as she has so much passion and care.

Kathy has inspired me to complete a course in care of children with burns as a play specialist, which ensures proactive distraction, reassuring both family and child when preparing for dressing change. The working relationship she has encouraged means that our roles complement each other, so the best outcome is always achieved and is less traumatic for the child and family. Her knowledge, passion, and enthusiasm have influenced and informed so many members of staff within the MDT as well.

Working alongside Kathy has been a privilege; she has had such a positive impact on all those she has cared for, but personally as well I have learned so much from her.  As well as my personal experience, Kathy has been able to facilitate continuity of care between children’s ED, Bluebell and children’s day services. Her valuable contribution to team time and her ability to impart her expertise have ensured that each patient receives the best possible care from arrival. Thus, has demonstrated standards of excellence and, ultimately, the Trust's values.

Kathy is long overdue recognition for the many years of excellence and hard work, she is a humble and worthy DAISY Nurse.
