Carmen may not realize what she did for our family, but her acts of love and kindness and helping my son get closure will always remain with me.
My father-in-law was on a norepinephrine drip to maintain HR and BP. He had become septic and was fighting a battle with Stage 4 bladder cancer. All of his family knew he was in his last days. Carmen Barrios was his nurse. When we told my 10-year-old son what was going on, he begged to be able to go to see his Granddad and say goodbye. This is the first person that my son has ever lost, and he is the oldest grandchild. Carmen got wind that he wanted to come visit but was too young, she made every effort she could to get special permission for him from the Charge Nurse and whomever else she needed to so my son could have a chance to get some closure and see his Granddad one last time. Carmen was in the room when we came to visit. Every time she spoke to my father-in-law, she would touch his leg or hand and look him in the eye. She had a radiance to her and always had a smile. Later that evening, my mother-in-law told me that Carmen would explain to her so she knew exactly what was going on, and even offered a shoulder if she needed one to cry on. We found out that Carmen has been nursing for only six months, but she had more knowledge and compassion than a lot of other nurses we had come across. She may not realize what she did for our family, but her acts of love and kindness and helping my son get closure will always remain with me. I wish every nurse had her smile, presence, loving attitude, and bedside manner. Carmen, from the bottom of our hearts, thank you so much for everything you did.
