She was able to build the kind of rapport the patient needed to break down his walls and allow her to perform her essential nursing interventions.
The patient had constant bone pain, which has been difficult to control. The patient has also been refusing a lot of nursing care interventions. For several days he would not let anyone assess his skin, bathe him, turn him, place him on a specialty bed or change into a hospital gown. We have tried to educate and work with him. However, he was very adamant about it being on his time and when he was ready. On day 4 of his hospitalization, Natalie Fuentes was his PM nurse. I came to round on the patient the following morning and I noticed that he had been bathed, he was on a Citadel bed, and he was smiling from ear to ear.
I asked the patient how he was doing, and this was his response, "Man I feel like a million bucks right now! That nurse from last night, Natalie, she was something else. I can't thank her enough for convincing me to get cleaned up. I mean, look at me, they helped me wash my face, changed my clothes, washed my hair...didn't comb it though, I'm just playing. Seriously though, I was so scared of the pain of moving, but she gave me the pain medicine before and talked me through everything. They left me feeling so much better. I even called my mom and sister and started singing to them this morning for no reason. She deserves an award or something."
The patient could not stop talking about how well he felt after getting cleaned up. Natalie demonstrated so much compassion and care when dealing with a difficult situation. She was able to build the kind of rapport the patient needed to break down his walls and allow her to perform her essential nursing interventions. As the patient stated, "She deserves an award or something," more specifically, The DAISY Award!
