It was my honor to nominate my colleague Judith Reagan RN for the truly personal end-of-life care she provided to patient and family in Bed 14. Imagine my surprise when what I thought was a transporter had brought the wrong patient to room 14 when I learned it was a beautiful story that was unfolding.
While a patient in the MICU was mourning his death Judy learned that his brother was hospitalized on another floor. She collaborated with the doctors, RNs, and transporters to bring him here and spend a last visit with him. She lined up brothers side by side (one on a stretcher and the other in the bed), they held hands and chatted for a bit.
The families watched this beautiful moment. After the MICU patient's brother was brought back to his floor, our patient passed away surrounded by his family. This act of honoring the human spirit with dignity and respect at such a sad time made the family feel so much peace and acceptance of his passing.
Judith went above and beyond without looking for any recognition. She really deserves this!
