Hello, I spent a few weeks in March/ April 2023 on the 5th floor Acute Care Unit due to the unavailability of rooms in the ICU. As a frequent patient of University Hospital, my case is unusual in that I am severely chronically ill with several rare conditions, which makes me a very challenging patient to care for.

Throughout my stay, I encountered various nurses and staff members who provided excellent care, but Jesusita (Jessie) Welker truly stood out. Beyond her evident professionalism and top-tier skills, what distinguishes her among her peers is her genuine compassion and kindness. She took proactive steps to understand my rare illnesses, striving to improve my care. She also shared her newfound knowledge with other staff members, enhancing the overall quality of my care and treatment.

Mrs. Welker not only possesses an impressive clinical skill set but her delivery of care is characterized by utmost compassion and a patient-centered approach. I often heard her helping her colleagues without hesitation but it never hindered her care for me. During some of my most challenging days, her presence brought a sense of tranquility and comfort not only to me but to my family as well. Her serene and gentle demeanor provided solace amidst turmoil, for which we are truly grateful. We also shared some laughs, which is always a welcomed delight when in the hospital.

What struck me even more was observing how Mrs. Welker interacted with other patients, their families, co-workers, and even passing hospital staff. Her ability to brighten someone's day with a smile, a kind word, or a humorous comment, even in the midst of the hospital's hectic and stressful environment, is a wonder. Working long and demanding hours while consistently radiating kindness to every individual she encounters is a testament to her exceptional character. I credit her incredible care with contributing to my improvement, and I am genuinely enriched by knowing her. Thank you for your time.
