Michelle’s immediate reaction was to collaborate with her unit’s nursing staff as well as the ICU staff to make sure that her patient could be at her husband’s bedside.
Michelle was caring for a patient, and just as the morning started, she was called by a nurse on another unit who informed her that Michelle’s patient’s husband was being resuscitated on that floor. The patient was made aware of her husband being admitted to the ICU. After hearing this information, Michelle’s immediate reaction was to collaborate with her unit’s nursing staff as well as the ICU staff to make sure that her patient could be at her husband’s bedside. Michelle stayed with the patient as her husband was stabilized, but it was clear that there were tough decisions ahead for their family. She could see the heartbreak in her patient’s eyes, but also recognized that her patient was fighting infections of her own. Michelle took the time to sit with her patient and her family; she explained that while her husband was stable, it would be important that the patient go back to her hospital bed to get her needed medications and some rest. After a few family conferences throughout the day, the patient and her family decided it would be best for the husband to be placed on comfort care. The patient was able to be at the bedside again, holding her husband’s hand as he passed away later that evening.
