It was a stroke of luck that I got Shayna as my nurse. Within a very short time, she made me laugh a huge belly laugh and I hadn't laughed in weeks!
I am very pleased to have the opportunity to nominate Shayna Finch for the DAISY Award. Shayna is a nurse, on the night shift, in the Med-Surg unit at Redwood Memorial Hospital where I recently spent 14 days as a patient, after 4 days in the ICU. I could never thank her enough for helping me recover from my emergency surgery, so I was glad to learn of the DAISY Award.

To me, nurses are the unsung heroes of the medical profession. They have to wear many hats. They have to dispense life-saving medications accurately and they sometimes act as maids, changing bedding, clothing, bedpans, and bathing patients, all with a smile. They are also called on to deliver TLC to struggling patients, may be their most important task. Shayna brings buckets full of TLC to her patients.

When I left the ICU and was admitted to the Med-Surg unit, I was at the lowest point in my life. I'd had a surgery I didn't want and was contemplating whether I even wanted to survive. It was a stroke of luck that I got Shayna as my nurse. Within a very short time, she made me laugh a huge belly laugh and I hadn't laughed in weeks! She helped me through one of the darkest nights I've ever had. I was so happy when she was assigned to me on the second night. I said through tears, "I'm so glad to see you because I really needed you tonight!"

As I recovered, and for much of the rest of my stay, she was the Resource Nurse (her favorite job). I was pleased that she was able to help other people as she had me. She always managed to stick her head in my room to ask how I was doing and often walked the halls of the hospital with me at night. We talked of life, our families, and the people we have in common, and I always enjoyed her goofy sense of humor. After one of our nighttime walks, as we passed the nurse's station, Shayna briefly stepped into another room. I asked the charge nurse, "Do you people realize what you have here?" She nodded vigorously and a few minutes later, brought the DAISY Award brochure to my room.

I recovered, thanks to Shayna and the other fine nurses at Redwood Memorial. I am home now, feeling great and I owe her a huge debt of gratitude that I will never be able to repay! She is very deserving of this honor and I would be thrilled if she wins it!
