Cheng sat there quietly, encouraging him and so patient, but you could see how much my friend's comfort mattered to him. We felt that care too.
Two weeks ago a very close friend of mine was admitted to Memorial Herman Katy Hospital. He had been in and out of Hospital a few times this year already and this last time was the last time he was admitted. He was in renal failure a complication from stage 4 bladder cancer. He was in a pretty desperate state and in a lot of pain. He was declining rapidly, and he was not always fully aware of what was being said to him and asked of him. His wife is not from the US and she was struggling to process what was happening and to understand all the medical situations that were going on. I was visiting frequently and on his last two days stayed at the hospital to help her manage. Having been around them quite a bit the last week and interacting with the Hospital staff (who were all very professional and kind) Nurse Cheng was exceptional.

He engaged with my friend, making sure he was completely aware of anything that was being done to or decided for him, anytime he walked in the room, he was cheerful and kind and patient, assisting us with whatever we asked and checking to make sure if that we had everything we needed and explaining clearly to both of them, making sure they were fully aware of procedures and medication before any action was taken.

The moment that really affected me above all, was the time he took to find him a popsicle because he was not really able to eat and drink, he was not able to move or swallow without difficulty. This may seem insignificant, but we had been struggling to get him to take in anything, and there was a lot going on and decisions that needed to be made, and he stepped in, in a hectic moment. He sat there quietly, encouraging him and so patient, but you could see how much my friend's comfort mattered to him. We felt that care too. He was as caring and kind to us, giving us the same consideration.

The last night we were in the hospital, my friend was very obviously declining, and at the end of his shift, he came and took the time to make sure we were all taken care of. In a really horrible situation, he managed to bring so much comfort.
