It is not every day that I’m headed into the hospital for an oral and maxillofacial procedure, thus it was quite normal for me to feel uncertain about all things post-operation. Webster's dictionary states that uncertain means; not known or established; questionable; or unsteady. These were all things I experienced during my overnight stay last week at UIHC following a grueling 4-5 hour operation. Although I knew ahead of time that the likelihood of being in great hands during the recovery phase was high - I had no idea what to expect.

Luckily, the nurse assigned to my care for that night was Katie Bryan! Katie was exceptional and certainly made my transition to home the following day more manageable. From deciphering my mumbling words as I tried to share what I needed next, to assisting me with staying hydrated as I pushed copious amounts of medicine - Katie made sure she did all she could to make my uncertainty manageable. It became clear to me quickly that I would be receiving top-notch care, and that led to me being able to relax and not overdo things too soon. Katie was very responsive to requests I made as I sought to find comfort and was extremely helpful when the attending doctors made rounds. Her attention to care and commitment to helping me feel better for that short overnight shift impacted me. While I know it’s her job, I greatly appreciate the care she displayed for me, and her contribution to my well-being hours after a major operation. Even when the bare minimum of care would have been fine, Katie went above and beyond!
