My husband and I recently experienced pregnancy loss. This devastating news was followed by the information that I would, in just a matter of a few days, need surgery for such loss. When I woke up after my procedure, I was greeted by Mary’s compassionate smile. My husband and I were just about to announce our pregnancy when we were told there was no heartbeat on our ultrasound. We were scared it might feel like this pregnancy never happened, since not many people knew. However, when I woke up, Mary said to me, “You are a mother. You are both parents. You were pregnant, and you have a baby. This is real.” My husband and I were so appreciative of this validation. I know it’s difficult to find the words when someone is experiencing loss, but Mary could not have said anything more perfectly. In addition to her words, she asked us personal questions about our baby and the pregnancy. She even gave us several special ideas on how we could remember our baby. Mary, thank you for making us feel like a mom and dad, even when we didn’t have a baby to bring home. We are so grateful for you.​
