Megan was calm and immediately went to work stabilizing my mother and organizing the team to provide safe and efficient care. Her confidence and clinical expertise allowed her to take charge of the situation.
As an Albuquerque resident, I’m used to seeing the UNM Lifeguard helicopter in the skies transporting critically ill patients who are undoubtedly having the worst day of their lives.

Recently, my mom was one of those patients. That afternoon, my mom arrived at a local urgent care center with what we thought was a moderate case of COVID. Unfortunately, she decompensated extremely quickly and became critically ill to the point that she needed to be transported via helicopter across town to an intensive care unit. It was not clear she would live long enough to even make it onto the helicopter. This is when the UNM Lifeguard flight crew arrived and Megan stepped in to care for my mom. I felt a wave of relief that was seemingly impossible given the circumstances. Megan was calm and immediately went to work stabilizing my mother and organizing the team to provide safe and efficient care. Her confidence and clinical expertise allowed her to take charge of the situation. Recognizing the limitations of the previous care providers, she courageously voiced concerns, leading to the transition of care to the Lifeguard team.

I will never forget the feeling of helplessness and horror seeing the Lifeguard Helicopter take off with my mom on board, but knowing that Megan was on board with her eased my immense anxiety. While there were many people who took part in my mom’s care over several weeks, I truly credit Megan as the reason that my mother made it into and out of the helicopter alive.

I look forward to many more years of morning phone calls with my mom and watching my son get to know his grandmother. Megan is an asset to the Lifeguard team, UNMH, and the state of New Mexico. Now, every time I see a Lifeguard helicopter flying, I will hope and pray that the patient on board has Megan by their side.
