Carson used one of the hospital mobile devices to take a photo of the patient when she was able to get him resting comfortably and uploaded it to the chart.
Carson was taking care of a very sick, nonverbal patient who was requiring a significant level of palliative care. She was in tune with this patient's complex needs throughout the night and knew when to escalate care to advocate for him while he was in pain. The patient's family had to leave for the night and were distraught about leaving the patient in the hospital during this time when he was so uncomfortable. Not only did Carson personally call the family multiple times (around 9 pm and again around 6 am), but she found a way to communicate beyond this. Just calling the family on her own showed how above and beyond she was willing to go for them since usually families are the ones calling the unit to ask for updates (not the other way around). But the most special thing she did was that she used one of the hospital mobile devices to take a photo of the patient when she was able to get him resting comfortably, and uploaded it to the chart with the caption "I love you, Mom, and Dad!" so that they could see that he was okay through the patient portal since they couldn't be there in person. On top of providing detailed care with intention, Carson found time to extend these kindnesses to this family going through this incredibly hard process.
