Throughout the stay, Jackson was endlessly patient with us, explaining medications, procedures, and alarms. His compassion, gentle care, and patience made him a bright spot for us during a very dark hour.
Our husband/father (S) suffered a cardiac arrest that resulted in a fall, face first, onto asphalt. The fall caused a le forte fracture. After defibrillation, he was taken to Moses Cone Hospital Neuro ICU - very scary stuff for a family with very little hospital experience. S was in the ICU for over 3 weeks, most of that time he was so heavily sedated that it was impossible to communicate with him. Sometimes, we would get a nod, a hand squeeze, a toe wiggle, or a thumbs up, but not often. During this time a new RN, Jackson, was sometimes assigned to provide care. Even though S couldn’t speak, Jackson took the time to learn S’s preferred name and always spoke to him at the start of each shift. He also spoke to him before performing any procedure describing what he was about to do. S was far less agitated when Jackson tended to him, and Jackson did not have to call in reinforcements to accomplish a procedure. It was clear to us that S understood and responded to this verbal reassurance. At one point during the stay in the ICU, S was extubated; however, after several hours, it became clear that he was not able to breathe on his own and had to be reintubated. We were rushed out of the room for the reintubation; we were just across the hall and could hear all that was transpiring. It was terrifying. Jackson was on duty that evening; however, he was not assigned to S. He came down to the room to check on S and also to check on us. That small act of kindness, checking on us, still brings tears to my eyes. Throughout the stay, Jackson was endlessly patient with us, explaining medications, procedures, and alarms. His compassion, gentle care, and patience made him a bright spot for us during a very dark hour, and we are most grateful for the support he provided us as well as the care he provided S.
