Our patient had just been transferred from the ER to the ICU in evident respiratory distress. He had, to this point, been adamantly refusing intubation if even to save his life. Clearly struggling with each breath, and though it was nearly shift change, Starla stood by her patient’s side discussing his condition, addressing his concerns, and advocating for his best interest to both nurses and the Doctor. Even though documentation suggested this patient had been educated on the necessity of life-saving measures, Starla continued to ask important questions to ensure her patient was fully informed on the severity of his illness and the necessity for advanced life support.

By nothing less than a miracle, Starla’s still soft voice and comforting touch provided this patient sufficient reassurance to receive the help he needed. Following a smooth intubation, this patient began to stabilize and begin his journey toward recovery. To this day, this man is alive because of Starla Darby and her compassionate heart. As her preceptor, I am honored to nominate her for this award for extraordinary nursing.
