While caring for a woman recently in the ICU, Esther Penderghest went above and beyond. For her actions, Esther is the recipient of the latest DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.

The patient’s husband nominated Esther for the award, explaining:

“Although all the nurses that worked with my wife from trauma to ICU to surgery were excellent, Esther in the ICU was outstanding. My wife… was in excruciating (9/10) pain, and Esther was so patient and caring. She took the extra time to listen to my wife and kept trying different positions and medications for the most comfort. And when a position only provided relief for a few minutes, Esther was right back at it to provide comfort.

Many healthcare professionals have knowledge, but it is the compassion and caring that made Esther stand out. Most importantly for my wife, her time with Esther was special. When Esther went off shift, my wife missed her and was slightly sad. Luckily, the other nurses were also excellent, but Esther was special to my wife and me.

[We’ll] never forget that little extra time and caring, Esther. Thank you so much. You are truly extraordinary.”
