Laurie and I collaborated on a patient, and she was nothing short of exceptional! I was working with a patient who had suffered a brainstem stroke and, unfortunately, was not able to safely tolerate any form of PO. This patient was scheduled for a PEG placement prior to discharge to ARU. I arrived to work and touched base with Laurie, who was the patient’s assigned nurse for the day. Laurie was up to date with the changes in the patient’s plan of care and notified me that his PEG placement was unexpectedly canceled due to a new MD policy. This news took me aback and left me worried for this patient’s nutrition status as he was now without nutrition for >7 days. Family was also very involved in the patient’s plan of care and had been receiving inconsistent information. I expressed my concerns to Laurie and inquired as to why the procedure was canceled. Laurie immediately took action, she was prompt in contacting multiple doctors (attending, GI, anesthesia, radiology) and ancillary staff to get our questions answered and worries addressed. She was collaborative, communicative, and respectful in her patient advocacy. She provided an alternate action plan, which included placing an NG tube as a temporary means of nutrition until further decisions could be made among doctors. She worked with the care team as well as the patient and family to communicate what was going on and what was being done to address the patient’s needs. I was so grateful to have Laurie alongside me to help this patient move forward in his care. I appreciate Laurie’s interpersonal skills, attentiveness, and willingness to go the extra mile to provide exceptional care.
