Karen received multiple nominations from her co-workers, this nomination is just one of many but notable in particular because she was n ominated by a surgeon:

While preparing my patient for surgery, Karen noted a suspicious lesion on his abdomen. After questioning the patient, she realized that her assessment was something new and potentially dangerous for the patient to continue with surgery. Her astuteness may have prevented an infection and or possible complication of the surgery. Karen immediately brought this to my attention and after thoroughly examining the patient, I made the decision to postpone the surgery until the patient could follow up with his primary care physician and receive the proper treatment; once resolved we would continue with the surgery. We need more astute caring nurses like Karen. This was a great safety catch and I would like to commend her for her astuteness and thorough assessment.
