Dejah, along with her fellow nursing student, showed great teamwork skills in response to a code on our recent ICU downgrade patient. The patient was stable upon arrival to the unit. Alert/oriented times 4. I have the pleasure to be their preceptor during this phase of their DEU program. Unfortunately, this particular patient took an unexpected turn for the worse within an hour of being transferred. The patient became unresponsive with weak threads pulse, and the code was called. All measures were attempted to regain a response but all failed. As we were having issues with calling code overhead, Dejah stepped in and was able to communicate effectively to our operator the location and need of assistance. Upon the arrival of code staff, she assisted with any need that was ordered. Upon stabilizing the patient, we transferred her to the ICU. Dejah and Emily went to the ICU to collect and return the monitor box; upon arriving at the bedside in the ICU, a second code was called on our patient, and both girls showed their skills when pulled into performing CPR. Again, I could not have been more proud of her for acting in such a professional manner to help the team attempt to resuscitate the patient. Post code I huddled with both students and talked through the code. I had a chance to answer questions and praise them on their ability to perform in a time of need. Thinking on her feet she was able to react to the situation at hand effectively and professionally. It was a learning event for her to see nursing at its worst and gain valuable knowledge for her future career in nursing. I am honored to be her preceptor and look forward to working alongside her in the future.
