Kelley Richmond had a very difficult laboring patient last week and, in her care, exemplified all that a nurse should be. The patient had cognitive deficits, was a first-time mom, had no visitors or support at the bedside for this labor and delivery, and was also homeless and apparently abused by those who did know her. Kelley volunteered to be this patient's nurse and proceeded to not leave her side for almost 13 hours. Kelley helped her to understand the labor and delivery process, calmed her many fears and high anxiety, and helped the patient to cope even though this patient understandably had low coping skills to fall back on. Kelley was a compassionate, steadfast support and advocate for this patient and was key to her successful delivery with a healthy outcome. In addition, Kelley maintained close contact with social support so that this patient could get the help she needed. I am so glad this patient had Kelley as her nurse that day.
