Sarah distracted my mother from her intrusive thoughts by playing and singing music (oldies but goodies, according to my mom), chatting over hot cups of tea, and working through her feelings with her.
My mother has had a whirlwind of medical issues since first being admitted to South Shore University Hospital. Once starting to regain her mental stability after recovering from a stroke and multiple other health issues, she truly struggled with the emotional aspect of accepting her current reality. After never being in the hospital throughout her life, she was now faced with constant worst case scenarios. One nurse who truly altered her mindset was Sarah. My father and I spent all of visiting hours every day for a month by my mother's side. Unfortunately, at night we were unable to do so. I later found out that my mother spent most nights awake, crying, and scared. Sarah sat by her bedside each and every night in between caring for her patients. Sarah distracted my mother from her intrusive thoughts by playing and singing music (oldies but goodies, according to my mom), chatting over hot cups of tea, and working through her feelings with her. When we think of nurses, we often associate them with attending to a patient's physical health. Sarah stepped outside of the box and cared for my mother's mental health as well. Sarah gave her hope in, what appeared to be, a hopeless situation. Her company gave my mom a sense of serenity during lonely nights without her family. Knowing that Sarah was assigned to my mother's case each night allowed me to have peace of mind when I was unable to be by her side. I am so grateful for Sarah, and I cannot express enough how much light she has shed in this very dark time. To this day, my mother is still recovering in the hospital, and every night, she asks, "Is Sarah here?"
