In death, Andrea created a memory for them to draw upon.
Andrea facilitated an unforgetable pause that shaped a family’s grief, fostered community, and reflected dignity. I still look to this day as one of many examples that speak to Andrea’s STAR service, leadership, and unwavering support of patients and families.

She had a young patient who was moments away from their last breath. She called the patient’s mother so she could be present and a lasting love could be realized. The patient’s mother was appreciative of the ability to participate in his final moment and considered it sacred.

Andrea was aware of the complex dynamics within the family and also cultivated a separate pause for the patient’s siblings. This pause included ‘an honor style walk.’ When the patient’s siblings arrived to the unit, they were met with team members lining the hallway to show respect and express condolences. The siblings were moved to tears by the display of love and honor for their brother.

In death, Andrea created a memory for them to draw upon.

It was truly the most beautiful moment and the act of memory-making created an opportunity for learning, educating, and reflecting for the team, especially her nursing student (as this was her 1st death). Andrea always goes above and beyond in patient care. We are so fortunate to have her in our palliative family. The only thing felt more than her presence on the unit is her absence.

Note: This is Andrea's 2nd DAISY Award!
