Miriam made an absolutely horrible situation bearable.
I met Miriam several days before my husband passed. She is the most compassionate human I have ever met. My husband was in the end stages of pancreatic cancer. He had elected to have an ileostomy to try and relieve the discomfort from the fistula that was causing him due to passing fecal matter through his penis. After the surgery he had a three way catheter and a pain pump. He still had the urge to urinate. The nurses were confused that he felt he had to urinate with the catheter. The pain pump was giving some relief but he was still uncomfortable. The pain continued to grow. At the time of the shift change, G was in such excruciating pain that he had bit his tongue. The day nurses had been trying to reach the day hospitalist, but it had taken three attempts, and at that time, the increase they made did not bring G relief. I had a towel in his mouth to avoid him biting his tongue again. Miriam was coming at that time. She jumped right in to help. They began flushing the catheter and massaging his bladder to break up the clots. Miriam also brought in the medical doctor, who was on, and she came to the floor, saw G, and monitored him all night. I stayed most of the night. Miriam kept a watchful eye on G all night and made sure he was able to rest. She refused to let him suffer like that. The next day, we put G in hospice. It was obvious that the ileostomy did not help. That evening, even with the increased meds and dilaudid drip, G was still in pain. He was waking up out of a sound sleep to try and get out of bed to urinate. They were still flushing the catheter but it was still causing him pain. G, at one point, set up in bed, took my hands, and cried, please help me. Again, Miriam was not his nurse, but I went to the nurses' desk because I could not wait for the bell to be answered. Miriam once again jumped in to help. She was able to flush the catheter and get it unclogged, administered the additional pain meds and even took a quick second to comfort me. Miriam made an absolutely horrible situation bearable. Her compassion made my husband’s last days bearable and kept me from becoming a crazy lunatic trying to get him comfort. I am forever grateful.
