We are the author of this nomination but we write for the entire staff on J5 to nominate Ed Reczek for the DAISY Award. Always kind, and always willing to help any one of us with something difficult or setting up a room for an admission, which involves moving beds, cribs, and toddler beds as is customary on a floor like J5. I know that the patients appreciate Ed as they often comment to me how wonderful the care was that they received from him the evening before I take over the next day. He is always respectful, adept, and described as so nice.

Behind the mask is a genuine smile that by the way none of us has seen for three years! You feel his smile though. And the sense of humor that always leaks through. At least now we can see his kind blue eyes since he stopped wearing the constant eye shield protection a few months ago. He was the wise one as I believe he is the only one of us who never got Covid. I have been on the other side as a family member of a patient admitted to J5 and had the pleasure of my father being assigned to Ed.

When Ed greeted him to admit him one evening, he came armed with the vital sign machine and blood sugar kit. He just did it all himself. He was considerate and respectful and I felt so proud to be a member of J5 as represented by Ed.

Another compelling example: A year or two ago, a staff member needed to be at a doctor's appointment at 4 o'clock Monday through Friday for one month. Without a word spoken about it, Ed arrived at work promptly at 2:30 PM to allow her to leave and be on time for her appointment. It is this type of consideration and compassion that makes Ed stand out both as a nurse and as a colleague. I think we would all agree that J5 is lucky to have Ed, we are very lucky to have such a great coworker. The most important thing, the patients admitted to J5 are very fortunate whether he is directly assigned to them or as the nurse in charge the evening that he is working. Bravo to Ed!
